Has anyone's company actually banned or restricted AI coding tools, and why?

Workplace & Culture

Heard of a few companies restricting tools like Copilot/Cursor over IP or security concerns. Curious about real examples and what specifically drove that decision.

Yes. Some companies and projects have actually banned or restricted AI coding tools rather than allowing unrestricted use. Why? The biggest reasons are security and privacy. Companies worry that developers may accidentally send proprietary source code, customer data, or credentials to external AI services. A survey by Snyk found that organizations restricting AI coding tools most commonly cited code security (57%), data privacy (53.8%), and code quality (46.4%). There are also real examples. Alibaba reportedly banned employees from using Claude Code at work and classified it as high-risk, citing security concerns and concerns about how the tool inspected user environments; employees were directed toward an internal alternative.
