Tried replacing a cloud LLM call with an on-device small model (under 3B params) for a simple classification feature in our app. Latency dropped from ~800ms to under 100ms and we cut API costs entirely for that feature, at the cost of noticeably lower accuracy on edge cases.

Our Cloud Run services were scaling to min-instances=1 across 14 services 24/7, most of them barely getting traffic outside business hours. Set min-instances=0 for internal tools and non-critical services and let cold starts happen. Saved about $2,100/month. Lesson: audit your idle floor before you touch anything architectural.

Rolled out a small fleet of Pi-based sensors for a client's warehouse monitoring project. SD card corruption from unclean power loss was the #1 field failure, not the sensors or code. Moved to industrial-grade SD cards and added a small UPS hat — failures dropped dramatically.
